There are two flowers commonly referred to as “pincushions” — one belonging to the scabiosa family and the other, featured here, is of the proteaceae family and known as the leucospermum genus. Found commonly in South Africa and Australia, the protea plant likes good air circulation, full exposure to sunlight, and ample drainage. It is a perennial plant that can also be grown indoors but has a relatively short life-span as a plant. As a cut-stalk, the pincushion is quite hardy and is a textural addition to bouquets and centrepieces.
